Aquaponics, “What is it”? Fish produce waste in the water. The growth-bed receives this waste and water hourly. The Bacteria in the grow bed converts into nutrients for the plants. Eventually, this water cycle flows back into the aquarium after it is filtered through the grow-bed.
Aquaponics involves breaking down toxic ammonia and turning it into nutritious plant food called nitrates. There are two types of nitrifying bacteria – Nitrosomonas and nitrosoureas. When fish produce ammonia it attracts a type of bacteria called Nitrosomonas.
These Nutrisomons convert the ammonia into nitrites which is a compound more toxic than ammonia. However, nitrites attract another type of bacteria called nitrospira that converts the nitrites into nitrates. Excellent food for plants, and mostly harmless to fish.
When this aquaponic cycle is complete and becomes stabilized, It will ensure ammonia levels are kept at a minimum while providing maximum nutdrition for the plants.
What’s in the Kit
•AquaSprouts Garden: comes in a modern black and matted design. The matching decor is easily assembled with no tools required.
•Light Bar: A removable light bar is included. You can affix any standard indoor grow light of your choice and simply adjust the light according to your plants’ necessities.
•Pump & Timer: included and the pump is submersible 9.5 Watts / 120 V 160 gallons per hour with a 24-hour timer that can be set for 15-minute intervals. Both pump and timer include a 1-year warranty.
•Grow Media: Special clay replaces the soil from traditional gardening. This serves as a support for your plants while in the growth-bed. It also provides a surface area that allows bacteria to grow and converts the fish waste into nutrients for your plants. The growth- media traps the fish waste and any uneaten fish food– making the growth-bed a mechanical filter. (Growth- media does not degrade)

How did you come up with the idea for this product?
Everyone on our team is makers, thinkers, hobbyists, and learners. We are all personally dedicated to promoting aquaponics. It’s simple, using hands-on, making AquaSprouts more than just a product. It provides a platform for you to explore and see how its synthesis of natural science and technology can change the world.
What makes your product special?
We designed the AquaSprouts Garden to bring aquaponic farming into the home, office, and classroom. We believe aquaponics offers something to benefit everyone. By combining fishkeeping and hydroponic gardening, aquaponics does things that neither can do alone, dramatically reducing waste and maintenance. By circulating the water from your aquarium through the Garden’s bed, the AquaSprouts Garden recycles fish waste to provide vital nutrients for growing plants, leaving the water clean and clear without the need for additional filters or frequent water changes.
What has been the best part of your startup experience?
Spreading our passions for aquaponics our goal with the AquaSprouts Garden is not to feed you and your neighbors directly, but to feed minds and fuel curiosity. The Garden is a miniaturized, living lesson in sustainability in a world where the concept becomes more important every day. This belief in a better future is one reason we place an emphasis on bringing aquaponics and curriculum kits to classrooms around the globe.
